Eastern Cape, South Africa
Silene capensis
African Dream RootKnown as Undlela ziimhlophe in Xhosa — "The White Path of Dreams"
Silene capensis
African Dream Root
History & Tradition
Among the most respected oneirogenic plants on earth. The Xhosa people of South Africa have used Silene capensis root as a sacred dream induction plant for centuries — central to initiation ceremonies and ancestral communication rites. The white flowers bloom at night, a feature the Xhosa see as deeply symbolic.
Reported Dream Effects
Vivid, complex dreams rich in narrative. Enhanced dream recall. A distinct sense of clarity within the dream state. Many users report encounters with ancestors, spirit guides, or profound symbolic imagery.
Sourcing: Ethically wildcrafted from the Eastern Cape, South Africa, with community consent agreements.
Legal botanical in the United States. Not for internal use as a pharmaceutical. Sold for ethnobotanical research and botanical collection.
Preparation Methods
Traditional Infusion
Beat the dried root into a froth with water and drink on an empty stomach before sleep. The froth — not the liquid — is the active preparation in traditional practice.
Powder Capsule
Fill capsules with 200–500mg of ground root. Take 30–60 minutes before bed. A food-free window of 2–3 hours enhances absorption.
Cold Water Infusion
Steep 1–2g of chopped root in cold water overnight. Strain and drink in the morning, then rest or sleep within a few hours.
Works best over consecutive nights of use. Dream quality often improves by night 3 or 4. Keep a dream journal bedside.
Mexico and Central America
Calea zacatechichi
Bitter Grass / Dream Herb"The Chontal Dream Oracle"
Calea zacatechichi
Bitter Grass / Dream Herb
History & Tradition
Used by the Chontal Maya of Oaxaca, Mexico for at least several hundred years as a divinatory and oneirogenic plant. The Chontal call it 'thle-pela-kano' — leaf of god. Traditionally used by healers to receive answers in dreams. Double-blind studies from the 1980s documented statistically significant increases in dream frequency and recall in sleeping subjects.
Reported Dream Effects
Increased dream frequency. Enhanced vividness and narrative complexity. Higher dream recall on waking. Some users report hypnagogic imagery during the threshold between wake and sleep.
Sourcing: Sourced from small farms in Oaxaca and Central America. Wild harvest only where sustainable.
Legal in the United States. Status varies internationally — verify before ordering.
Preparation Methods
Tea (Traditional)
Steep 5–10g of dried leaf in hot water for 10 minutes. Drink before bed. The taste is intensely bitter — this is considered part of the ritual significance.
Tincture
1–2ml of standard tincture under the tongue or in water 30 minutes before sleep.
Smoke (Traditional)
Small amounts smoked before sleep in the traditional Chontal method. Not recommended for respiratory-sensitive individuals.
The bitterness is real. Adding raw honey can help. Some users experience vivid hypnagogic imagery even before falling asleep — this is normal and welcome.
Europe, Asia, North America (naturalized)
Artemisia vulgaris
Mugwort"The Traveler's Herb, the Dreamer's Companion"
Artemisia vulgaris
Mugwort
History & Tradition
The most globally widespread dream herb on this list. Mugwort has been used across European, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Native American traditions for dream work, divination, protection, and menstrual support. Medieval European travelers stuffed shoes with mugwort leaves to prevent fatigue. In TCM it is central to moxibustion practice. Artemisia vulgaris contains thujone, camphor, and a suite of terpenoids that appear to act on GABA receptors.
Reported Dream Effects
Deeper, more vivid dreams. Increased dream recall. Many users report a particular quality of lucidity or self-awareness within the dream. Gentle enough for nightly use. Some users report prophetic or symbolically rich dreams.
Sourcing: Organically grown and ethically wildcrafted from European and North American sources.
Legal botanical worldwide. Sold as an herbal product.
Preparation Methods
Dream Pillow
Stuff a small cloth pillow with dried mugwort and place beneath your sleeping pillow. The vapor from the dried herb influences dream states without ingestion.
Tea
1–2 teaspoons of dried leaf per cup. Steep 5 minutes. Drink 30–60 minutes before bed. Pleasant, slightly bitter flavor with sage-like notes.
Tincture
0.5–2ml before bed in water. Faster onset than tea. Our tincture is 1:5 ratio in organic cane spirits.
Smudge Bundle
Burn as incense in the sleeping space before bed in the Native American smudging tradition.
Avoid during pregnancy — Artemisia vulgaris has a documented history as an emmenagogue. Not for those with ragweed allergies.
Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia
Entada rheedii
African Dream Herb / Sea Bean"The Great Bean of the Dreaming Sea"
Entada rheedii
African Dream Herb / Sea Bean
History & Tradition
Entada rheedii produces some of the largest seeds in the plant kingdom — the seeds (called 'sea beans') can travel ocean currents for years. Across sub-Saharan African traditions, the seed kernel is used to induce contact with the spirit world through dreams. In some traditions, the seed is split, the inner kernel removed, mixed with other plants, and rubbed on the forehead or temples before sleep.
Reported Dream Effects
Profound, highly memorable dream states. Heightened sense of significance and symbolic resonance. Some practitioners use it specifically for ancestral communication work. Less studied scientifically than the others on this list, but extensively documented ethnographically.
Sourcing: Seeds sourced from ethical collectors across sub-Saharan Africa. Supply is limited and seasonal.
Legal botanical in the United States. Sold for ethnobotanical research and collection.
Preparation Methods
Kernel Extract (Traditional)
Remove the inner kernel from the seed. The kernel is mixed with plant material and ash in traditional practice and applied to the skin. Internal use is not common.
Tincture
Our Entada tincture uses the inner kernel extracted in alcohol. 1–2ml before sleep.
Seed Carrier (Ritual)
In some traditions the seed is simply kept beneath the pillow or worn as an amulet — the physical proximity held to be sufficient.

Dream Work Practice
Keep a Dream Journal
The single most important companion to any dream herb practice is a notebook kept at the bedside. Dreams dissolve rapidly after waking — most within 60–90 seconds. Write the moment you open your eyes.
With consistent use over 7–14 nights, most people find that the herbs amplify an already-developing dream practice. Herbs are an amplifier, not a shortcut. Your own intention is the substrate they work with.
